High School Datathon4Justice
The National Math Festival and the Institute for the Quantitative Study of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (QSIDE (opens new window)) are pleased to announce the inaugural High School Datathon4Justice, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 11:30am – 5:30pm Eastern Time!
Modeled after QSIDE's wildly successful fall 2021 University-level Datathon4Justice, this event will be coordinated with high-school math/data science programs and will focus on building skills, analyzing real-world data, and inspiring the next generation of student scholars to ask and answer pressing social justice, inclusion, and equity questions using powerful data techniques.

2022 Inaugural Event
The 2022 event will focus on a dataset of the diversity of artists in major U.S museums in regards to race/ethnicity, gender, date of birth, and region of origin, drawn from a study published in PLOS ONE in March 2019 (opens new window).
Teams will be provided with a step-by-step curriculum to go through during the datathon, and a small stipend for the faculty team leads at the school to compensate them for running the event. A data scientist from the QSIDE community will be provided as a consultant to help answer questions during the weekend.
Thank you to our participating schools around the U.S.:
- Glendale Unified School District (Glendale, CA)
- Paramount School System (Paramount, CA)
- Chesapeake Math and IT Academy (Laurel, MD)
- Plainfield Community School Corporation (Plainfield, IN)
Curriculum Toolkit
Coming May 31, 2022, QSIDE will release a curriculum and pedagogical toolkit to help faculty members at other high schools to run their own datathons. Instructor support materials will be free and open to all who are interested. More information will be provided here when the kit is released.
We hope to see other datathons at other school systems around the country in coming months and years!
Our Partners
Thank you to QSIDE Institute for this inaugural collaboration. We are also grateful to our co-sponsors at the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (opens new window) (M3 Challenge), a program of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
